Grooming Equipment
Plus Grooming Tips

The following equipment will make grooming your Bichon much easier on you and your dog:

A good brush is a necessity.  We recommend the Doggie Man Designer Series brushes.  They come in two sizes -- small and larger.  We use both sizes.  The brushes cost approximately $10 for the small and $13 for the large.  UPCO is slightly less expensive for these brushes than Petedge.com.
Comments:  These brushes are Bichons' favorite chew toys -- keep them up and away from your dog.  It only takes a minute to destroy the brush.  It can get very expensive.  Also, if the handle breaks, don't throw your brush away.  I use super-glue and glue it back together.  It usually breaks at the blue line on the handle.  In addition, I use vet wrap on the handle to make gripping the brush easier.

Another necessity is a good comb.  We recommend the "Original Belgium Greyhound"  comb with medium and coarse teeth.  This can be purchased for around $12.00 through the catalogs or at the dog show.   #1 All Systems has a great comb that we use on our Bichons.

A good flea comb is very important.  Bichons are allergic to fleas therefore you must keep them flea free at all times.  A well made flea comb helps you attack the fleas with ease.   UPCO carries these combs for $3.60 each.

We recommend the Andis clippers.  You only need the single speed clippers.  The clippers can be purchased with a #10 blade to fit all of your clipping needs when used with the extension combs below.  The clippers can be purchased from UPCO for $95.50 or Petedge.com for $92.77.
Comment:  Make sure you purchase the blade wash and Mr. Cool N Lube to maintain your clippers in good working condition.

Clipper Combs help you to trim your pet Bichon evenly.  You can use the clippers with the comb attachment on their belly and back.  Purchasing the set of comb extensions helps make sure you have the right length for each part of your Bichon's body.  These can be purchased from UPCO for $22.50 for the set of 8.

The next item for you to consider is a hair dryer.  This really cuts down on the amount of brushing it takes to straighten your Bichon's coat.  It is well worth the investment if you consider how much time you will be standing their with your hand held dryer.  The ChallengAir 2000 A.D. XL Portable Dryer by Double K is my pick for an inexpensive all around dryer.  It has two speeds.  UPCO carries this dryer for $149.00 and Petedge.com for $143.93.

There are a number of stand dryers.  This allows you the use of both your hands while you are drying your Bichon.  It makes it much easier to straighten the Bichon's hair.  Stand dryers usually have 2 temperatures and 2 air volumes.  Dryers can be purchased from Petedge.com and UPCO for $137.97 to over $500.00.

If you have more than a couple of Bichons to groom, consider purchasing the Edemco Force Box dryer.  It has 3 motors for fast drying.  Petedge.com carries this model along with the cart (see below) for easy movement from place to place.  It does require a special 220 plug installed in your home's electrical outlet that comes with the dryer.  The cost is $429.85 for this dryer.

The above dryer fits securely to the top of the rolling cart for ease of use.  Petedge.com carries the optional cart for $48.98.  It makes a neat place to store the hose.
