Grooming & Other Tips

Grooming tables with the adjustable arms make grooming so much easier.  There are a number of different qualities of tables and arms.  Depending on how much you plan on using the table, taking up and down, etc. would depend on how much you would spend on the table.  UPCO's prices start at $109.00.  Petedge.com's prices start at $89.84 which includes the arm.  My personal preference is the Precision grooming table that is available at the dog shows.  Also, at the dog shows you can purchase grooming arms that fold up flat for easy storage.

No one really likes to trim their dog's nails but it must be done regularly.  Using a sharp nail trimmer helps.  Start training your puppy at a young age to accept having his nails trimmed.  Petedge.com and UPCO carry a number of different styles of nail clippers from battery operated grinders (please be careful not to catch their hair in the grinder) to the guillotine style.  Whichever style you choose, it is a good idea to use a nail file to smooth  out the rough spots.  Prices start at $5.97 for the trimmers and $10.97 for the Professional Nail File Set from Petedge.com.
Another important grooming aid is ear cleaner.  I prefer R-7 Ear Cleaner.  As soon as I finish bathing our dogs, I put R-7 in each of their ears to help dry any moisture and keep them clean.  Make sure that before you give your Bichon a bath, you remove all the hair inside of the ear.  Please be extremely careful if you use tweezers to remove the hair.  You can pull it out with your fingertips.  Do not reach inside the ear canal with tweezers where you can't see.  UPCO carries R-7 for $4.90.

There are a number of instructional videos on the market to teach you how to groom your Bichon yourself.  It is not easy to do it yourself.  However, the good part is that the hair grows out in 6 weeks so your mistakes do disappear eventually.  Show Bichons are trimmed 100% by scissors and someone very experienced in grooming.  You can use clippers and scissors on your pets.  The head, neck and legs need to be cut with scissors.  The body is trimmed with the clippers using an extension comb attached to the clipper blade.  UPCO has Bichon videos for $14.95.  Petedge.com offers two different videos for show grooming $49.97 & $69.97.
An exercise pen comes in very handy especially in the beginning if you have to leave your puppy for an extended amount of time.  You can set up the ex-pen someplace safe.  Put the water dish, toys, crate with the door removed or open, and potty paper in the ex-pen.  The 30" high ex-pen is great for a non-jumping Bichon.  If your Bichon jumps, you can always add a lid to it.  I purchase my ex-pens at the dog shows because they are cheaper but Petedge.com carries them starting at $41.97.  UPCO carries them, too, but they are higher priced.

There are a number of different style and size gates available.   I prefer the step-through gate for confining my Bichons to the room that I'm in.  I hate jumping over gates or taking them down and putting them back up all the time.  The step-through is the answer to both those problems.  Petedge.com and UPCO carry this style of gate for $65.
You should NEVER take your Bichon in the car without them being either in their crate or in a safety harness.  The harness works well in the front seat if you don't have airbags. If you have airbags, you are much safer placing your Bichon in their crate in the backseat.  UPCO carries this style for $9.40.  My Bichons wear a size Small Easy Rider Car Harness.  (Ex-Small is too small for them).

We recommend rolled leather collars for our Bichons.  It does not break the neck hair as bad as some of the other types of collars.  Bichon puppies use a 10" collar and our adults Bichons use either a 12" or 14" collar.   Different makers of the collars seem to vary their sizes.  Prices start at $5.25.  Both UPCO and Petedge.com carry the rolled leather collars.
